Considering Building an Extension? 5 Things You Should Check

We all like to make home improvements now and then. A popular idea is to build an extension to your home. If you’re considering building an extension, then here are five things you should check:

Planning Permissions

The first thing you should check is whether or not you can build an extension. Sometimes, the city council won’t allow it. Maybe your house is situated too close to another building for you to be able to have an extension. The last thing you want to do is prepare to build one, and start building it, only to be told you can’t. Get in contact with your city planning division and get permission to build one.

Check how much money you have to spend on this project, before you start. You must calculate the costs of everything, and know that you can afford it. Don’t start building without thinking about money. You don’t want to end up midway through your extension and realise that you’ve got no money left to pay for it.

Next, you’ve got to think about how much time this will take to complete. You’re going to have a lot of construction stuff hanging around your house while this goes on. It’s important you let your neighbours know that things will be noisy. It’s also important that you let them know how long things will be noisy for.

Pipes & Cables

Your house is going to have loads of pipes and cables running underneath it. These are all part of your utilities. Water pipes to allow your house to receive water. Electric cables to bring all the electric into your home. These things will need to be setup if you build an extension. The biggest thing to think about is where they will go. Naturally, it makes sense for them to go underground too. So, you have to make space for them before you start building. It’s a tricky job because they need to be connected to the rest of your house. Luckily, there are plenty of utility location services that will help you out and find how to fit them.

Build Design

Finally, consider the design of your extension. Think about how you want it to be built. You’ve already got your utility pipes underneath, now work from the ground up. If you want it to be green, you have to include things like solar panels in your design. Check that you know exactly how you want it to be designed. It’s not a good idea to go in blind and make things up as you go along. Once you’ve come up with a design for your new build, check to see if it’s possible. You might find that you want a design that is physically impossible to create.

Keep all these things in mind if you want to build an extension. Bookmark this page and use it as a checklist. Once you’ve checked everything off the list, you should be good to go!
