Most people forget about their gardens when they’re building an eco-friendly home. After all, a garden is already pretty green, right? Well, yes and no. Some gardens are far more environmentally friendly than others. Some could also be doing more harm than good. Do you want to make sure your outside is as eco-friendly as your inside? These small changes can help you do just that.
Bring in the Bees
If you want a truly eco-friendly garden then you’re going to want to attract wildlife. Especially those species which are endangered! Bumblebees are a prime example. You can attract a wide variety of wildlife by planting lots of brightly coloured flowers. Particularly wildflowers. You will also want to make homes for insects such as ladybirds. These creepy crawlies will actually protect your other plants from harmful pests. Create a flourishing eco-system in your own backyard.
If you want to light your garden then consider solar power lighting. It’s the perfect place for it! You can buy some pretty nifty solar powered lights, which will keep your garden glowing at night. Without harming the planet. You can get fairy lights to hang from the trees or little lanterns for the pathway. There are so many great ideas, all of which are eco-friendly. If you have any other solar-powered gadgets then build a little shelf in the garden. You can then put them all out there to soak up the sun during the day. Clever, huh?
Your Garden Furniture
Most people will have furniture out in their garden. After all, how else are you supposed to enjoy your new green paradise? It’s a good idea to consider how sustainable your new furniture is. You want to buy tables and chairs from a company who care about the environment. You also want to buy furniture that is friendly to the environment. This grey rattan garden furniture is the perfect example of what’s right. Plastic tables and chairs are a no-go. They’ll just end up as landfill when you’re finished with them.
Mulch and Compost
Every good, green gardener should make their own mulch and compost. You want to steer clear of most shop-bought versions, as they contain harmful chemicals. It’s so easy to make your own, you won’t want any of the stuff in bags any way! Not only will it save the planet, but it will save your bank balance too. We always knew going green was the way forward.
This idea is such a great one! If you want to do your bit for the environment then make sure you have a water butt. Be doubly eco-friendly and make one out of recycled materials! This can then catch rainwater which can be used back in the garden. For watering your plants, for example. If you want to go one step further, then buy a water filtration system. You can then turn that rainwater into drinking water.
These changes are all super effective, yet don’t take up a lot of time or money. Make sure your garden really is green for a truly eco-friendly home.
